SPAS III

Shuttle Pallet Satellite-III

Under contract to MDA, SDL developed the SPAS III sensor, a telescoped, infrared imager featuring two complex focal plane arrays, a 256 x 256 InSb detector operating in the SWIR and MWIR, and a 128 x 128 HgCdTe detector operating in the LWIR. The focal plane arrays were to be cooled by a mechanical cryocooler.

The instrument was to operate aboard the SPAS satellite, a reusable free-flying vehicle that could be deployed and then retrieved by the Space Shuttle's Remote Manipulator System arm. SDL completed development of an infrared spectrometer and redesign of the focal plane array before the program was cancelled at Government convenience.
